The Geologists’ Association field meeting was planned to cross the Thai Peninsula from Phuket to Songkhla and examine the geology of one of the blocks, Sibumasu. Although the Gondwanan origin of Sibumasu is well established (e.g. Ridd, , Metcalfe, , Metcalfe, ), until recently little attention had been paid to the nature. The major strike-slip system in southern Thailand is dominated by the Ranong and Khlong Marui faults which cut across the Thai peninsula, trending NNE-SSW from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman.
The granites in this belt occur as small isolated plutons and are characterized by multiple intrusions of porphyritic biotite-muscovite granite (with K-feldspar megacrysts). They occur predominantly along the Burmese-Thai border and along the western part of the Southern Thai peninsular, including Phuket . In fact, the Ranong-Phuket area near the Andaman Sea coast and the southern peninsula of Thailand produces 85 percent of its tin output. Onshore and offshore placer deposits are the key tin source. Additionally, Thailand has some production of gypsum, limestone, kaolin, sapphire, zircon, tantalite, columbite, antimony, lead, zinc, barite and.
